project 1 rational

the rational

the idea behind this project was to help a parent keep their child healthy in a playfull way.

there is an increase in child obesety due to fast food in our society while a decrese in social interaction between children due to televisions, computers and other gadgets like nintendos.

my design aimed to address both these issues.

the first is the lunch box which has both measurments on the inside so that food can be measured as its put in but also a box that is portion controlled in size, this is a tool for the parent to give their child a healthy balanced diet without the hassle of wondering how much exactly should the child get.

the second issue of decrease in social interaction i have solved by making the lunch box that look like lego, this means that the child can interact by himself with the lunchbox but not watching a screen, but more importantly the lunch box blocksare a tool in encouraging interaction between children as there is more than one piece meanig that children can play with them together.

the actual material of the luncbox would be plastic which is easy to clean and naturally has rounded corners rather then sharp corners which is safer for children

Ideo pleasure for the
concened with nutrition
and health, as
lunch box sizdes are
portion controlled

This definitely suits your target market. Its looks like a very fun lunch box to bring to impress the other school kiddies. I like how it has 2 uses so this product wouldn't be tossed aside the day after it was bought. Colours could be a little brighter for the kids but the variations of colour make up for it. The interaction that the user has with the product makes me want to do the same thing because it just seems interesting, you never know what will be in each tiny compartment until you open it.

Although the different compartments can be very useful, it seems that the size of them are a bit unconventional. The largest box could fit a sandwich but the smaller ones look like they could only fit a tiny candy bar. An apple would definitely not fit in there if they were meant to be eating healthy (maybe a small slice of apple could fit). Another thing is that if you were designing for a young market, it would always be better to round the corners of your product to prevent any lawsuits against you from parents with injured kids. You've related these to legos which also have sharp corners but legos are much smaller so they would do less damage.
You haven't stated what type of materials you would make this with but i'm guessing some type of plastic so it would be light and durable? There also seems to be a small problem with how the kids would carry their lunch box with no handle.
I think it would be interesting to make it more than just a block since theres already lego around. Maybe put small wheels on some of the blocks Still and enjoyable product as is though.

Hi Nitzan

as i'm a bit of a kill joy i'm going to start with a couple of problems i think i may have identified with your product thoguh I really like the overall idea of your product and the issue that you have raised. I think portioning of the meals could be a good idea if there was a way of controlling the food that was portioned. for example chocolates and lollies are very small yet extremely unhealthy for growing children. if you designed a meal plan for the parents to fit in these 'portioned' containers it would create more of a control of unhealthy products. Another reason being that these unhealthy products are small snack size and therfore lazy parents may be obliging to fill these small containers with those unhealthy products.

I think your idea of trying to get kids away from the television and computer is great but what came across my mind is that kids usually use lunchboxes during lunch time and recess when they're running around with their friends and not when they're at home watching tv. Maybe some other type of product to be used at home rather then at school?

Also i was thinking it may be a little bit unhygeinic for the kids to be playing with the lunch box and then putting their food in it etc. looking at kids play they like to get down and dirty and having that getting in their food would probably be a bad idea.

i think the colours are great and would really entice the child to use the lunch box and get excited about eating healthily. children are stimulated visually and the idea of it being interactive would create shock excitment on first use.

i also think it's really good how the product can be chopped and changed so that parents can customise the lunch box for their childs individual needs. Maybe find away to remove some of the sharp edges for safety purposes.

overall i tihnk you've really found an issue of concern (child obesety). The idea of having an interactive dining product which distracts children from television is something that should really be developed but i don't know if a school lunch box is the best way to combat that issue because children tend to be doing most of their excersise at school anyway.

keep up the good work.

A very interesting design you have here, the first thing that drew my attention is that it is very eye catching. The variation in colours also adds to that effect. I really like the reasoning behind your choice of design as your making an impact to help others in life on a important issue in society.

On first glance it was eye catching however i didnt really know what the product was, it doesnt really look like a traditional lunchbox but its good to be different and unique in style. Another thing i noticed was the smaller boxes to the eye looked really small, maybe you can have a more varied sizes in boxes.

i think your design is clever in that it is very simple so kids can interact with it. i like the use of colour, they are bright and varied.
however i think there are a few problems. i think the proportioning of meals is only a good idea in concept. there is just too much variety of sizes of foods which satisfy each food group. in a box which could hold a banana, you could probably fit 10 strawberrys on another occasion. are these to equal in nutritional value? im not sure. but my point is that size is not a very good way of portioning meals. im not sure how you can get around this problem...

I like the idea of this product, and I think you are thinking about some important issues. I think using a lego-like shape is a great idea and would inspire some interest at mealtime for the littlies.

However, you have not mentioned what materials you want to use. It looks like your model was made of timber. My main concerns here are that timber tends to be heavier, thicker, and much harder to keep clean, especially if it is meant to come into constant contact with food. Rounded edges would also be useful in keeping the young children safer. Other than that, I love this idea, and the bright colours are wonderful!

Great chose of colour, i can see you did a long reasearch, and found the problem then soleved it perfectly. I love the way you put circle as the joining points, and the contrust of circle and squre with different colour made it plaful, but simple at the same time. Homever it's more like a container then a hand tool.
